Kentucky General Assembly special session on COVID-19 continues

A special session of the Kentucky General Assembly continues into a second day with eastern Kentucky hard-hit by the latest COVID-19 surge. Lawmakers in Frankfort called this a historical moment for the state. 94th District representative Angie Hatton hopes the session will ease public mistrust in executive orders. She also hopes they’ll come out of this with spending authority to meet the needs of Kentuckians and battle the pandemic, but also a stronger consensus. So far, lawmakers have taken initial steps to block mask mandates, pushing instead for local decision-making. They’re also trying to rescind the state School Board’s universal mask mandates in schools that’s a CDC’s recommendation. Lawmakers are expected to meet all week.
